In May 2006 Alan Rankin became the first person to circumnavigate Scotland by boat and bike.
Starting on the Solway Firth Alan sailed, single-handed, the 1,000 miles round Scotland taking in the outlying islands of: St Kilda, The Flannan Isles, Rona, Orkney, Shetland and then headed south to Blyth. Despite suffering steering gear failure in the North Atlantic 70 miles north west of Rona which forced Alan to make for Stromness for two days to carry out essential repairs and then sitting out southerly gales for seven days at Lerwick Alan managed to complete the sailing leg landing on the north east coast of England at Blyth. Alan then cycled the 162 miles back to Scotland crossing the border at Gretna and returned to his starting point at Kirkcudbright so completeing the first ever singlehanded rounding of Scotland by sail and pedal power alone.
The challenge is looking to raise money for two charities: Ocean Youth Trust Scotland an independent sail training charity whose objective is to take 12-24 year olds to sea and The Parkinson's Disease Society the leading charity dedicated to supporting all people with Parkinson's, their families, friends and carers.
