Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's Awareness Week 24th April, for more information click here

My second charity is again a personal choice.

Sailing has been such an important part of my life and I hope that through this charity challenge I can put a little back to two causes that mean so much to me.

"I lost my Dad as a result of Parkinson's and I believe the cure for this horrible affliction is out there. It must be found so that families do not have to suffer the agony of seeing their loved ones struggle and suffer. My Dad built a Mirror sailing dinghy and taught me how to sail and was keen sailor himself. He enjoyed many a happy cruise on the west coast of Scotland and I only wish he was here now to share this common love."

Alan has another close sailing link that has been touched by Parkinson's disease.

"In 1995 I was given the loan of a mooring buoy for a season at Dunstaffnage Bay near Oban by John Leckie of Crieff. Since then I have had some of the most enjoyable experiences with familiy and friends sailing on the west coast. By that kind gesture of allowing me to use his mooring John opened up the marvels of sailing on the west coast of Scotland and for that I will be enternally greatful. John also introduced me to the Scottish Islands Three Peaks Race in 1996. The sailing and hill running race has been a fixture in my life since then and serves as a great annual sharpener to me. Sadly John too has been struck with Parkinson's and continues with the love of his family and friends to fight the condition."

There is a cure out there, it is just taking time to find it. Please help to speed this process up by donating whatever you can to the Parkinson's Disease Society.
